Sealants Make Sense
February is National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM)! Golden Valley Health Centers (GVHC) will be promoting the benefits of starting good oral health at a young age throughout the month.
Did you know that dental sealants on permanent molars reduce the risk of cavities by 80%? Sealants are a thin, protective coating that adheres to the chewing surface of back teeth. Although sealants can prevent cavities and decay from forming, they are no substitute for brushing and flossing. Teaching children about good dental hygiene starts at home! Don’t forget to regularly visit your dentist, because they will be able to advise when and if sealants are a good option for your child.[1]
GVHC offers dental services not only for children but the whole family as well. To schedule an appointment, visit our website for the location nearest you here:
The History of National Children’s Dental Health Month
The first small events celebrating NCDHM were held in February 1941 in Ohio. These events started as a small, one-day observance and grew from a week-long event to now a month-long program. NCDHM then became nationally observed for the first time in February 1981. Each February, the American Dental Association (ADA) sponsors NCDHM to raise awareness about the importance of starting good oral health young.[1]
